What is Energy Healing?

When we think about energy healing, many people seem to think that it is some weird New Age woo-woo thing. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Various cultures have been talking about energy healing for 1000s of years, yes 1000s of years. Consider the Ayurvedic tradition, vata, pitta and kapha energy centres have been long discussed. Chakras have been talked about since at least 500BC and some records suggest it may go as far back as 1500BC. Energy healing is not new.

The energy field around our body is able to be measured. If you have experienced any heart health issues you may have had an EKG (or electrocardiogram). An EKG measures the energy around the heart.  While an EEG (or electro-encephalogram) measures the energy around the brain. Energy fields are the way that the body communicates with intelligence to itself and enables different systems to communicate with each other – for example if you are coming down with a cold, your immune system kicks in.  Energy healing is not weird New Age woo-woo either as it is has been researched extensively and is used frequently in Western medicine.


What is Energy Healing?

Disease or dis-ease is often the result of blockages or imbalances in the body’s energy. It is also interesting to note, that where we feel pain is not necessarily where the blockage occurs. Energy healing is a holistic practice and looks at removing blocks whilst stimulating energy flows. This process then helps the body to heal itself.

Energy healing is a non-invasive technique and is often complemented with other sensory tools and techniques including crystals, sound baths and aromatherapy. Touch is used to restore harmony and balance within the human energy system. It helps to clear, balance and stimulate the energy fields.

You may be surprised to learn that there are quite a number of energy healing techniques. Some you may have already heard of others may be new. They include:

  • Reiki
  • Reflexology
  • Emotional Freedom Technique
  • Pranic Healing
  • Spiritual Healing
  • Reconnective Healing
  • Qi Gong
  • Tai Chi
  • Healing Touch
  • Acupuncture

Benefits of Energy Healing

A word of warning before commencing therapy with an energy healing practitioner. Any person who claims that you will enjoy a quick fix solution or significant change needs to be approached with caution. Consider for example you have put on weight, one session at the gym is not going to help you to lose that weight. Similarly, with an energy healing, it takes time to re-calibrate the energy movement in your body.

When you embark on your energy healing journey, it is helpful to recognise that the changes are likely to be subtle rather than dramatic. Over time you will notice improvements across all aspects of your well-being. As energy moves more freely you will notice changes in your spiritual, mental, physical and emotional well-being.
