How does Reiki work?

Reiki is a therapy you may or may not have heard about. However, in recent years, there has been an increased focus on alternative healing therapies specifically including Reiki. Leading medical schools are now looking into the clinical effectiveness of this mode of healing.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an alternative healing therapy and is often referred to as an energy healing. Reiki emerged in Japan in the late 1800s. It involves the transfer of universal energy through the palms of the practitioner directly to the patient/client. Essentially, Reiki works with the energy fields around the body.

What does Reiki do?

Energy can stagnate in our body where there has been a physical injury or some emotional pain. These injuries can lead to blockages. Sometimes that pain can be noticeable, other times it may be felt at a deeper subconscious level.

During a Reiki session, your practitioner will aim to reduce or eliminate the blockages. This then enables energy to flow freely around your body which improves your overall physical, emotional and mental well-being.

What happens during a Reiki session?

Reiki is a subtle and passive therapy and is usually done fully clothed. It should be noted that this is not a therapy where the practitioner is trying to change you or your energy. The practitioner is responding to your energy and what is needed to create a sense of balance in your energy field.  Reiki is a highly personalised therapy and responds to your specific needs.

Typically, you will lie on a massage table or alternatively, you may be reclined in a comfy chair. There is very little physical contact in a session. The practitioner may gently rest their hands on your body for several minutes at a time, typically two - five minutes, often their palms are face down towards your body.

The practitioner feels a warmth or tingling sensation in the palms of their hands. When they observe that the sensations have changed they will move to a different part of the body. Usually the pattern for hand placement will be the same between sessions, the duration of a particular hand placement will vary depending on the energy transference required.

Benefits of Reiki

There are several benefits to a Reiki session. They include:

  • A decrease in pain sensation
  • An increase in healing
  • Increased sense of relaxation
  • A reduction of the intensity of other symptoms and/or illnesses
  • A great aid in improving emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being.

By the end of a Reiki session both the practitioner and client will experience a sense of increased energy and improved emotional well-being especially in the form of loving kindness.

Reiki, whilst a subtle therapy, can be powerful in increasing your sense of relaxation and your overall sense of well-being..
