Why gym - when you can Sauna?
Did you know you can burn 200 - 600 calories SITTING in ONE thirty minute sauna session?
Did you also now it takes approximately an HOUR of JOGGING to burn around 584 calories!!!
I know what I'll be doing everyday... and it isn't jogging!
Sauna has been a way of life in Finland, where it was invented, for over 2000 years. One of the first written descriptions of the Finnish Sauna was in 1112. The earliest Sauna was dug into an embankment in the ground. Thankfully these days we are little more civilised and 'luxurious' with our sauna-ing and have created beautiful timber boxes for us to sit in and get all sweaty... (my humour muscle is twitching with a funny about a timber box... but I'll just leave that one to twitch... not appropriate Aimee, not appropriate).
There are many benefits of this ancient Finnish tradition, some of them include:
- better sleep.
- weight loss.
- relief from sore muscles.
- relief from joint pain such as arthritis.
- clear and tighter skin.
- improved circulation.
Traditionally, you sit or lay naked in a sauna... You sweat so much, that it just makes sense to be naked in there. You sit on a towel, for hygiene, and is a place to relax. I have found that I can use the time meditate as I have 30 minutes in there, it's peaceful and is purifying for my body - so may as well purify the mind and spirit while I'm at it.
Before you go into a sauna you should make sure you are well hydrated and keep the water intake up after your treatment. Being well hydrated will help speed up the detoxification process.
It's a great idea to have a cold shower after a sauna as this helps with blood flow and aids in the healing of sore muscles.
Basically - it's a win-win, they are time out for you, they are great for your health and if you don't like going to the gym or want to get in some extra 'sessions' - it's PERFECT!
